About Geoff

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and a PGDE in Primary Education, giving me both a strong analytical background and professional training in how people learn.

Beyond quizzing, I have a long-standing interest in language learning and have earned the DELF B1 certificate in French, the DELE B1 certificate in Spanish, and the HSK Level 2 certificate in Mandarin Chinese. Learning these languages has given me first-hand experience of building and retaining large bodies of knowledge over time.

As a competitive quiz player, I have participated in quizzes covering the full spectrum of general knowledge, including Art & Culture, Entertainment, Physical World, Sports & Games, Lifestyle, and Civilisation & History.

I'm a competitive quiz player with a fascination for the cognitive science of learning and memory. As a teenager, I watched shows like Mastermind, University Challenge and Jeopardy! in amazement, wondering how contestants could retain such vast amounts of knowledge. Since I wasn't blessed with a naturally "sticky" memory, I became interested in a simple question: can this ability be developed?

That question led me on a decade-long journey of experimentation. Like many aspiring quizzers, I tried everything from flashcards to memory palaces, often hitting dead ends. I found myself asking, "If I'm doing thousands of flashcards, why don't I remember everything?"

Drawing on cognitive science, memory research, educational psychology, and the practices of successful quizzers, I've developed a structured approach to learning that focuses on the three stages of memory: encoding, storage and retrieval. Rather than simply collecting facts, the goal is to build knowledge that can be recalled flexibly under quiz conditions.

As a trained primary teacher, I understand that every learner is different. Whether you're completely new to quizzing or already competing regularly, lessons are tailored to your experience and goals.

For beginners

If you're just starting out, I'll help you build an effective learning system from the ground up. We'll look at how to use spaced repetition software such as Anki alongside tools like Google Sheets to organise your learning, monitor progress and gradually build a broad knowledge base. You'll also learn what makes a high-quality flashcard, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to use encoding strategies that make information easier to retain.

For intermediate quizzers

Many quizzers discover they can answer questions from flashcards but struggle with free recall during real competitions. We'll work on turning isolated facts into interconnected knowledge by using techniques such as mind maps, timelines and thematic links. The aim is to build rich mental frameworks that make information easier to retrieve, even without obvious cues.

I made many mistakes while developing my own learning approach, and those experiences now shape my teaching. My aim is to help you avoid the trial and error I went through, so you can spend more time building knowledge and enjoying the process of becoming a stronger quizzer.
