About James
I am a patient and empathetic 1st class psychology graduate/special educationalist with more than 10 years experience. I hold a PGCE since 2010 gained while working in a special further education setting. For the last 4 years I have worked at HE level, working with DSA funded undergraduate and post graduate students with SpLDs including dyslexia, ADHD and ASD; more than 75% of my students have finished their studies with a higher grade then expected; 50% have achieved 1st class awards. I communicate well and have developed a range of skills including active listening.

I use a metacognitive approach to working with students; that is I try to encourage students to think about their own process in tackling coursework and revision. I then aim with the student to develop study skills strategies to help any areas which require work; for example in reading, planning and structuring of time. I also use strategies like mini teaching for the student to deepen their own learning about trickier topics; these are drawn from an admiration of the 'Socratic' method and Dale's learning cone.

I've been working with James for the past 2 years of my degree, he's provided support and guidance throughout this time and has really helped me improve my essay writing and presentation skills. I'd always recommended him as a tutor to anyone who might asks.
James helped me feel confidence, stay calm and be organised in the face of the professional and academic challenges of my final year at university. He helped proofread, plan and focus my applications and essays. His calm and empathetic approach will be beneficial to so many people and I am happy to recommend him to other.
SeanI’ve been a mentee to James for just over a year now. He cares about your progress and you can tell he enjoys his job. I have progressed as a result of his teachings.
James is a great tutor! He has been my dyslexia support tutor for the past year at Lancaster University. He is kind, patient and committed to your needs and always suggests tips and tricks to help when it comes to academic writing, time-management, and planning. He goes above and beyond to understand why you may find a certain issue challenging and helps you overcome them. Would really recommend James!
James has been my study skills mentor at university for over a year. With his support I’ve seen a significant improvement in many areas of my academic life, such as time-management, proof-reading, and revision, among others.
I’d recommend James in a heartbeat for many reasons: He’s a good listener and always finds a way to make me feel confident about what I am working on. He focuses on what would benefit you the most in each session and his advice helps you to develop useful strategies for work and studying in general.
The bottom line being that he is easy to talk to and will make you feel comfortable straight away, in my opinion you would not regret having James as a mentor.I have known James personally for many years as well as trained him as a meditation teacher. Not only does he have the ability to explain concepts clearly, but also the sensitivity to empathize with students, understand their concerns and find ways of relaying information that engages and stimulates them. He is also an excellent speaker and has a warm-hearted manner. I could not recommend James more highly as a teacher.
