About Juan Pablo

I am a current 3rd year PhD student in earth and space science at York University with an MSc in Quantum technology and a BSc in Physics from the University of Glasgow. I have always had an insatiable curiosity to understand the laws that govern our universe and learn to manipulate our physical environment to achieve marvelous technological feats. This led me to embark on a physics with astrophysics undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow followed by my master's in Quantum technology. However, during my master's I developed a keen interest in orbital mechanics and space exploration which led me to pursue a PhD in earth and space science. As a PhD student at York University, my research is focused on autonomous robotic on-orbit assembly for space-based solar power structures which I find extremely rewarding. My previous mentoring experience includes being a CIT counselor and camp counselor for grades 10 and 11 for two consecutive summers. Here I learned how to communicate and connect with campers while helping them develop valuable leadership skills. I also tutored math, physics, and MATLAB coding on a British tutoring platform for 6 months and have been a teaching assistant for a 3rd year thermodynamics class and a 1st year physics class. In these latter experiences, I learned to package and communicate more advanced and specialized concepts in a way that resonated with each individual student. In my free time, I am a keen runner with a history of competing in the 800m and 1500m. I also hold a skydiving license which has allowed me to jump out of a plane 110 times. No matter what I do in my life, I found that a strong foundation of Math and Physics has shaped the way I learn and interact with the world on a day-by-day basis.

As a private tutor, I strive to tackle the shortcomings in traditional classroom teaching by specifically tailoring my teaching approach to my students so that they can feel confident in applying and furthering their knowledge in whatever technical endeavor they choose to undertake. I take great pleasure in understanding how my students think and framing concepts in a way that is digestible to them. My approach involves a free initial consultation in which I gather information to help me prepare my lesson plans and teaching strategy. I first establish what the student's specific needs, areas of strength, and areas of weakness are. I then discuss a timeline with the student, based on course-specific deadlines and student availability for tutoring. During the initial consultation, I also take note of the student's higher goals, ambitions, and passions. After the initial consultation, I delineate a tutoring strategy based on the discussed timeline and areas of need. For online tutoring, I prepare a set of PowerPoint presentations tailored according to the student's learning needs and timeline requirements. To better convey both mathematical and physical concepts, I aim to provide examples and real-life applications related to the student's career goals or passions. Meanwhile, for in-person tutoring, I prepare a set of lesson plans indicating which topics and exercises should be covered at each session. The first lesson after the initial consultation serves to demonstrate my tutoring methodology and gives the student the opportunity to assess how my tutoring style connects with them. During each lesson, I aim to spend half of the time covering theory and the remaining half working through exercises together. This structure is flexible to the student's needs and is adapted every session to ensure all of their needs are met.
