About Kate

My name is Kate, a 5th year medical student in Cardiff University. I love sciences and maths as well as working with other people and children. In my spare time, I am a CEO of a business I set up 2 years ago, and work in a language school with children from all over the world in summer.

My Experience:
Throughout my career, I have had both training and experience teaching colleagues, other medical students and secondary school students.
During summer, I work in a language school with children from all over the world, aiding their learning of English. This has provided me with a vast amount of experience as I have worked with children of all nationalities from ages 9-21, full time every summer.
In medicine, I have completed ‘Learn to Teach’ training, developed and undertaken teaching sessions for younger years and I have also developed teaching sessions for secondary school students on different aspects of Medicine, all of which have provided me with valuable skills for tutoring.
In medicine, we also have training in communication skills helping us to have the best methods to communicate and work with other children and people.
I have taught students GCSE biology and KS3 sciences, maths and geography in the past. All of these lessons were very successful and have given me experience on how best to tutor.

Why I Want to Tutor:
When applying to medicine, it was extremely hard to achieve the grades required without extra help- and without my tutors, I never would have been able to study the course of my dreams. However my tutors helped me immensely, meaning I understood these topics to a different level and achieved the grades I needed. I hope to be able to give back and help other students the way I was helped, in order for them to move into the career they want to peruse.

With many years of teaching and in-depth knowledge of sciences I have developed personal and individual learning techniques for biology, chemistry and math which are interactive and engaging for students.

I structure each lesson to the student’s way of learning as each student learns in a different way. I prepare before each session and tailor the lesson to the appropriate level and on what the student would like to get out of the lesson- whether it be preparing for an exam, going through past papers or learning new topics and helping the student make notes. I also love feedback, to find out what aspects of lessons the student gets the most out of, so I can further tailor lessons, so they can be perfect for my individual student to achieve the best learning possible.

Throughout my medical degree, teaching has been a fundamental aspect and a very important part of my career. I have had training on how to teach as well as experience teaching both basic and in depth level sciences and maths to both colleagues, other medical student and secondary school students.

My degree has also taught me many ways to learn, teach and memorise topics which I can teach my students, as well as efficient and engaging ways to make notes and learn. This includes interactive games, individual mnemonics and diagrams, as well as the most effective ways to revise by using active recall rather than passive learning.

In medicine, we learn through a ‘spiral curriculum’ which means revisiting topics at later dates to consolidate knowledge, which is a very effective technique I undertake with my students too. By combining all these methods and tailoring lessons to the individual, students learn effectively in a fun and engaging way.
