About Soraya
Hello, my name is Soraya! I have been in the academic world for almost my whole life, and have a true appreciation for education, teaching, and learning. I also have an avid interest in health, fitness, and nutrition, which is the direction I initially took when embarking on my graduate and post-graduate studies. Although I've lived most of my life in Southern California, I actually grew up in the Middle East. My early childhood was spent in Iran, and this is most likely where my love for learning developed. My mother is a teacher, and I would often sit and watch while she taught students from home. Later on, when we moved to California, I would sometimes help her develop lesson plans and grade papers. Her sincere love and passion for teaching grew on me, and my entire upbringing centered on this appreciation for learning and thinking, for asking questions and running experiments. After high school, I moved to London, England, to pursue a degree in Human Nutrition. I then later returned to England again to pursue a Master's in Food and Health Policy. Academia is particularly rigorous in the UK, and the academic in me thoroughly enjoyed the high expectations and strict grading standards imposed by the education system there. However, I am well aware that this love for learning and academics is not inherent in everyone! That is why my methods center so much on the process of learning, and the implication of the information that is being taught. Oftentimes students don't see the relevance of their assignments, and become frustrated and bored by tedious busy work or poorly structured lessons. I completely understand! And that's where I can help. I don't want to just slog through homework assignments for the sake of getting it done. I want there to be some enjoyment along the way, some insight gained, some "a-ha" moments, or at the very least some laughs!

Teaching, and learning, is about more than just figuring out the correct answer. My students learn how to think critically, how to find answers creatively, and how to enjoy the entire process. With this approach, actual knowledge is gained and information is retained. My background is in the sciences-- primarily biology, nutrition, and health science. However, I have always had a natural strength and affinity for writing and reading, and therefore I am also able to teach subjects in the English/ Literature/ Language Arts areas. I am comfortable teaching from the elementary school level, up to the high school level for biological/ health sciences and Language Arts. If a student also needs side help with certain subjects, such as history or math, I can also try to help. I am well aware of my limitations, and will not attempt to teach a subject unless I am confident I can help the student. The last thing I want is to add additional confusion or frustration to the learning process. I am, however, happy to work with the student to see if we can figure out certain problems together, or at least find out what the barriers are to our understanding. Again, teaching and learning is a process. The methods are just as important as the answers, and in some cases can be more important. In an age of Google, answers are everywhere. But thinking skills and knowledge development cannot be obtained by a simple Google search. This is where a teacher, who truly cares about education and the learning process, becomes paramount. Reach out to me today and let's begin!

She’s patient, a great communicator, and knowledgeable in her craft. She’s my recommendation to any parent looking for a tutor.
Soraya is such a kind and patient teacher! I started her off with my daughter who wasn’t doing too well in a couple subjects, and lacked the confidence to ask for help. Soraya let her really develop her skills and made it easy for my daughter to feel comfortable and heard. Later on I had my son also work with Soraya, and she kept things fun to keep his attention, and he actually didn’t mind doing his homework for once! A really lovely girl; my family enjoyed their time with her.
Soraya is a very caring and committed teacher. She doesn’t rush the process, and always makes an effort to meet her students where they’re at, and teach them in a way that’s most conducive to their learning style. And she also tries to keep things light and fun, which is refreshing and makes her students look forward to working with her.
