Without having a full grasp of the fundamentals, students will have a difficult time proceeding to the higher level mathematics like functions. I believe that starting off at the fundamentals and ensuring that the student is confident with should be the first step. Afterwards, finding the motivation that pushes the student forward is key. Practice, practice, and practice until you are fully confident about each and every subject leads to success, but doing so requires motivation.
