About Thomas

I am Tom Slater, BA (hons) MEng. A graduate from the University of Cambridge, and I am reading for a PhD at Imperial College London. I love tutoring as it allows me to pass on the knowledge and skills that I was taught onto the younger generations. I particularly enjoy the challenge of adjusting my teaching style to a method which fits best to my students.

Hi! I’m Tom, a Cambridge Graduate, PhD student and an experienced tutor, having carried out over 100 hours of tutoring. I focus my tutoring on Oxbridge admissions, maths and chemistry. My degree in chemical engineering has kept me well versed in these subjects.

My style of tutoring focuses on improving your grades, rapidly. The tutoring I have carried out has kept me up to date in the current curriculums and style of exam-questions.

My teaching approach:

> Simplicity and real-life examples - I explain concepts in simple terms and with experiences that we encounter everyday and can relate to easily!

> Diagrams - I can make confusing concepts become clear using suitable diagrams.

> Practice Exam Questions - I utilise a range of exam questions to test my students and to figure out where they need me to focus on more.

In addition, I also:

I work hard to plan lessons and to cater to each student's individual needs. Some students learn in different ways to others, and it’s key to know how my students learn best.

I love to utilise questions as a form of teaching. I like to be quizzed on what a student doesn’t understand. And additionally, I will ask my students questions to figure out what I need to explain further for them.

Thanks to my ability to explain things in multiple different ways I always find a method which connects with each studet. This leads to me having great results for all my students. I will inspire my students by demonstrating why I enjoy particular topics. This can develop their interests and ultimately, their grades :)

Example lesson:

I will introduce the topic to the student, briefly. I will ask questions as I go along. I will then highlight the learning outcomes, to make it clear what we have to cover. I hope to understand where a student requires help through their questions. This should allow me to establish your level of comfort.

We will often start with an explanation of the terminology used in for that topic in books and in exam papers and use diagrams and examples to simplify these. We will then move on to working through a question. This may be exam-level. The student and I will share our thoughts and we’ll answer the question together.

Finally, I will conclude our lesson by summarising the key learning points from the lesson. I will set a couple of homework questions to test the student’s knowledge on the topic before the next lesson. They will send me these for marking and we’ll cover them in the next lesson :)
