About Justin

My name is Justin Lee and I've been practicing Martial arts for over 20+ years. I started off as soon as I can remember in my father's school and have done everything from performances, exhibitions, and tournaments. I achieved the equivalent of black belt in my school at Taiji Kung Fu Academy in Jacksonville, FL as well as attaining national and international titles in the ICMAC circuit for Kung Fu. I gave up that career early on as I gravitated towards teaching and trying to replicate that success with my students. With decades of experience, I've gone through trials and tribulations of what works and what doesn't. I took a break from martial arts for a long time but came back to it because the one aspect I loved from it all was seeing people succeed under my instruction. My goal is not for you to get a black belt or to keep you to satiate a money grab system that a lot of schools do nowadays. I want to inspire confidence whether that be in the form of getting in shape, feeling better about defending yourself or just learning a new craft.

Specifically, I teach Kung Fu, both hand forms and weapons, Sanda, grappling, and Tai Chi intertwined into an easy to understand and fun class. My goal is to take the traditional aspects of Chinese Martial arts and adapt it into something stream-lined and modern with a focus on fitness and self-defense.

Class typically start with weapons training and onto self-defense/hand-hand combat. Things can be tailored to your liking in private classes as well!

  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started in martial arts as early as I can remember. My father owned a martial arts school
and it's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Going through the journey of kids classes,
teens/adults, performances, competitions, exhibitions, choreography and teaching people of all ages, I've been
through whole process and have fell in love all the aspects of teaching and growth that is gained from both sides.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

Besides martial arts, I'm an avid basketball player and while not advanced, I used and still am to be hugely into
hip hop dance and gaming, specifically old school runescape!
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

I'm completely honest in that I haven't practiced martial arts myself for awhile, but I remain actively teaching
and that's what has kept me going since then. I enjoy learning about different people, their backgrounds
and their motivation for learning martial arts. The process of finding that "a-ha" moment where things click
is highly gratifying as a mentor and to see it pay off dividends as we learn further beats all.
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

Winning my first grand champion title during an international kung fu competition. Going to the same competition for
so many years and gradually climbing the ranks and finally nailing the forms was a huge accomplishment I hold
    in high regard.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

On the martial arts side, I believe I've come out more calm and level-headed in higher stakes/dangerous situations.
On the teaching side, I've become more compassionate and methodical - being able to identify and remove obstacles of my students.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

It would have been Kobe Bryant. He was an inspirational figure for me that got me into basketball and helped
establish a mentality that would help me in so many facets of life. I'd honestly want to have a funny, poke your
brain conversation. I've seen all the serious, esoteric videos of him explaining his thought process, but
I want to humanize him and have a goofy, sit-down dinner at korean bbq or something.
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

I like to first understand the big broader goals of why we're taking martial arts classes and frame the
session in a way that is relatable and approachable. Then on a smaller scale, I like to set small goals
and establish clear roadmaps so that we can visibly see our progress and what we're working towards.
Like nailing down a punch, adding in footwork, then combining those, then focusing onto speed and intensity.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

I believe I'm empathetic and try my best to understand what's going to work best for the both of us and to
    anticipate your needs.
