About Sterlyn

I am an accomplished violin tutor with 9 years of experience teaching high school and college students. I have successfully guided 300 to 350 students, helping them build strong technical skills and musical confidence. My teaching philosophy is rooted in collaboration, empathy, and open-mindedness, ensuring every student learns in a supportive and understanding environment. I focus on bowing technique, intonation, and sight reading, while staying flexible with different musical styles to match student interests. My goal is to help every student grow into a skilled, confident violinist with a genuine love for playing music.

About the lesson

My teaching approach for Violin, Music Theory, and Sight Reading focuses on helping students develop technical mastery while nurturing their personal connection to music. With nine years of experience guiding violinists, I have built a methodology that values working together, understanding each student, and staying open to different musical paths.

Collaboration shapes much of how I teach. I often bring in ensemble style exercises, duet practice, or group sessions where possible, helping students learn to listen closely to others, match tuning and timing, and understand how their playing fits within a larger musical context, not just as a solo pursuit.

Empathy guides how I connect with every student. Learning violin can be demanding, especially with bowing technique and intonation, and I take time to understand each student's individual struggles and comfort level, adjusting my approach so they never feel pressured or discouraged during their learning process.

Open-mindedness is something I bring to every lesson. I stay flexible with different violin styles, whether classical, contemporary, or folk, and encourage students to explore genres that interest them rather than following a single rigid teaching path, helping them build a more personal relationship with the instrument.

My lessons typically begin with posture, bow hold, and finger positioning, followed by scales and simple melodies to build muscle memory. I introduce music theory early, including rhythm and note reading, to support their overall musical understanding.

As students advance, I focus on refining intonation, tone quality, and more complex bowing techniques, along with sight reading practice to build confidence with new pieces. For performance focused students, I also work on stage presence and interpretation.

I adapt my teaching to match each student's personal goals, whether they are playing for enjoyment, preparing for exams, or working toward advanced musical achievement. My overall aim is to create a collaborative, empathetic, and open minded space where every violin student can grow with confidence.
