About Summer

I am a student at Butler University studying actuarial science and risk management. I have been tutoring the past three years to elementary through college students in various math courses including statistics, algebra, precalculus, probability, calculus, and business calculus. I have the most experience tutoring college students at Butler by working in Butler University's math lab. However, I also have experience working with younger kids. I have privately tutored 3 kids in elementary and middle school and have provided after school math guidance at an elementary school for a semester.

About the lesson

My teaching method is to pick up a pencil as little as possible, and have the math student do almost all of the writing. I first ask the students questions such as "what do you think we should do first?" and "what have you tried so far?" so I can gage what they understand and what they don't and then go from there. I want to ensure that the student conceptually understand the math, so they can do it on their own when I am not there, opposed to just lecturing them. Most of the math tutoring I do involves just doing practice problems together, but what works best varies with each student. I base my classes on what lesson they are on in the math course they are taking, and try to eventually get them a bit ahead of their syllabus, so they can succeed in class.
