About Tobi
Hi, I’m Tobi! I’m an Aerospace Engineering graduate from Carleton University, but some of my earliest teaching experience actually started long before university.
One of my closest friends growing up learned very differently from me. We went through school together, and I was often the person sitting beside her before a test or assignment, trying to find another way to explain something that hadn’t quite clicked in class. We’ve been friends for over 15 years, and those experiences taught me something I still carry with me today: being good at a subject doesn’t automatically make you good at teaching it. Sometimes the challenge isn’t the student — they simply need the concept explained in a way that works for them.
That became a theme throughout my life. I was a straight-A student in high school and was selected as a peer tutor for students in my grade and younger years. I continued tutoring throughout university, and even friends studying subjects completely outside of engineering would sometimes bring me their notes so we could work through concepts together.
I’ve also had the opportunity to teach younger students through STEM outreach and as a volunteer at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, where I helped children understand concepts like how airplanes work. Today, I continue teaching through my work in financial education, breaking down topics that can initially feel complicated or intimidating.
So while I love math and have a strong technical background, I don’t expect every student to love it or understand it immediately. I’m patient, I welcome questions, and I’m happy to explain something three different ways if that’s what it takes to find the explanation that finally clicks. My goal is for students to leave our sessions not only understanding the material better, but feeling a little more confident in their own ability to figure things out.

My approach to tutoring is focused on understanding, not memorization. I first identify exactly where a student is getting stuck, then break the concept down into smaller, more intuitive steps. If one explanation doesn’t click, I’ll approach it differently until we find a way of thinking about it that makes sense to that student.
A typical lesson starts with understanding what the student is currently learning and where they need support. We’ll work through the underlying concept together, go through examples step by step, and then have the student work through problems independently so I can identify any remaining gaps.
One of my strengths is making complicated subjects feel much simpler. I’ve tutored students since high school and university and have taught STEM concepts to children through educational and outreach programs. I also teach financial education today, so explaining complex ideas clearly to people with different levels of knowledge is something I do regularly.
I tutor math from elementary through high school, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, functions, calculus, statistics and data management. Whether a student is struggling with a particular topic, needs to strengthen their foundations, or wants to get ahead, I adapt the lesson to their individual needs and learning style.
