About Marinus
I studied Mechanical Engineering in Nigeria for my first degree, Vehicle Engineering at Tsinghua University in China for my MSc, and I am currently doing a PhD in Aerospace Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. For my PhD, I am researching the noise from aircraft wings when approaching the airport for landing.
Apart from academics, I like to keep abreast of global issues and happenings, and so, I use Twitter a lot during my free time. I also love engaging in conversation around global problems and their solutions and I did this a lot when I was in China, hosting and participating in fireside chats with speakers from all over the world. With COVID, it has been harder to replicate this since I moved to Canada.
I also like building cool things. At my university, I belong to the wind turbine and fixed-wing aircraft design clubs. I love watching and playing soccer during my free time and when the weather permits.

My teaching style is centered on the student. This means that I have no one size fits all teaching style for every class and for every subject. In general, for every class I teach, my main goal is to get the students to understand and internalize the concepts (not just to be able to give me back what I gave them so as to pass exams). I seek for my students to be able to add the concepts I teach to their scientific vocabulary (like someone who learns a new word and can now use it in everyday conversation in the right context).
A typical lesson plan will begin with a trivia based on the previous class. I would then go through key points from the previous class, before sharing another trivia based on the planned lesson for the day. This will set the tone for the day's work, and raise students' expectation. After this, I will introduce the day's class and share expected outcomes from the class. The class will be paused for questions and assessments at several points to test students' understanding. At the end of the class, I will review the objectives set at the beginning of the class, and ensure that they have been met. I will then leave room for general questions and answers, and end the class with some assignment or reading in preparation for the next class.
My outstanding quality as a teacher is that I actively listen to my students. I listen to and understand their spoken and unspoken complaints, challenges and fears; and as much as possible, I try to respond to these feelings.
My classes are for anyone from middle school to undergraduate level, and I teach math, physics, and mechanical and aerospace engineering courses.
