About Barry
Growing up, watching movies and TV was a big part of my life. Watching magic appear before my eyes on those screens always gave me a sense of what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. When I wrote my 1st short film at AFDA, I felt obsession, purpose, and desire to write more. This desire helped me write a short film that ultimately was selected to play at film festivals around the world. I have worked on many productions, notably as a learner writer on Afrikaans medical drama Hartklop (2023-). Gaining many insights on the ins and outs of developing a TV show. Currently, I'm developing my very own show, and while I reach for my goals, I seek more to inspire and help grow to tell their own stories.

Fluent in Afrikaans and English. Lessons will focus on helping the student understand story structure, format, and themes. Discussions on the aforementioned will be held and examples from short films and scripts analyzed. The rules of scriptwriting will be explained as we study scriptwriting textbooks (at no additional cost). Learning the rules and finding ways to follow, bend, and even break them. As an exercise, you will write a short film OR short pilot episode with a simplistic brief to flex the skills you've learned, and I will review it in discussion with you. Risks and mistakes are encouraged as practice makes perfect! Lessons for the more experienced writers delve deeper into the next steps after you get the hang of scriptwriting. Important aspects such as the dreaded elevator pitch, a comprehensive pitch deck, and many more to sell your story and make your script into a reality. I also offer script editing to your scripts to help it reach its full potential.
