About Alastair

- What kind of experience do you have? Ongoing freelance work with the choruses of English National Opera (with whom I have appeared in over 20 productions to date) and Welsh National Opera. I have also sung on the concert platform with the Netherlands Radio Choir, BBC Singers, Geoffrey Mitchell Choir, and Philharmonia Voices. In addition, I am an active oratorio soloist and have sung a number of solo operatic roles with smaller companies in the UK and abroad. 2 years' as a singing lay-clerk in Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford. I am currently a member of the professional choir of the Temple Church, where I have been a Choirman since 2004. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have an up to date DBS (July 2017). - Where and with whom did you train? Oxford University Guildhall School of Music (with Laura Sarti) I have ongoing singing lessons with Gary Coward - Tell me about some of your current students. I started teaching privately in 2016, and am currently teaching both children and adults. A number of my students have had success with their ABRSM Grade exams. Below is an informal interview, which gives you a bit more of an idea of who I am. "Singing has always been an important part of my life. I moved to Germany when I was 9 - my father was a professional conductor and landed a job in one of the country's many opera houses. I sang 1st boy in the Magic Flute and loved it. I never wanted the rehearsals to end! Since then I have sung in chapel and cathedral choirs at university, before becoming increasingly involved in stage work upon moving to London. I still work extensively within these two fields, performing beautiful choral repertoire from all eras at the Temple Church in London, and switching to the great operas of the Romantic and 20th Century as an opera chorister. I like the difference between these two worlds. In church you are uplifted by the atmosphere of the place, and are singing in an intimate, chamber-like style as part of a small vocal ensemble. On stage you are in costume and often in wig and makeup, moving around the various sets and lighting in the guise of a particular character, using your voice without any music to refer to. Roles I have taken have included Ethiopian slave, NY policeman, grail knight, Gold Rush miner and Japanese nobleman! The life of a freelancer has its pitfalls - you never quite know where your next job is coming from! - but certainly one of the advantages I have found is the ability to travel. My singing has taken me all over the world, from magnificent old churches in Holland to theatres of all shapes and sizes around the USA, and from concert halls in New Zealand to a cruise ship travelling down the Amazon. For those that are prepared to work hard at their craft and love what they do, there's a real wealth of experience to be gained out there both as a professional and amateur, rich in variety and opportunities for adventure. I wish every musician the best of luck and bon voyage."
