About Matthew
I’ve always had a strong foundation in math—I excelled in it during high school and carried that confidence into my academic path. I earned a liberal arts degree in 2008, and after working for many years, I made the decision to return to school 14 years later to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
That experience of going back into a rigorous technical program later in life gave me a real understanding of what it takes to learn, relearn, and retain challenging material over time. I know firsthand how frustrating it can feel when concepts seem unfamiliar again, and also what actually helps them stick long-term.
I am currently a practicing transportation engineer, and I hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering as well as my Engineer in Training (EIT) certification. That real-world engineering experience reinforces my math background and helps me connect classroom concepts to practical applications.
As a tutor, I use that experience to help students build lasting understanding, not just short-term test prep. I focus on strengthening core concepts, filling in gaps, and helping students develop the confidence to work through problems independently.
I work with middle school, high school, and early college students in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. My goal is to make math feel more manageable, approachable, and something students feel capable of mastering.

I keep tutoring pretty straightforward: figure out what’s confusing, fix that first, and build from there so the student actually understands what they’re doing instead of just copying steps.
Usually I start by checking what they’ve been working on or where things broke down. Then we go through a couple problems together slowly, talking through the “why” behind each step. After that, I’ll have them try similar problems on their own while I step in when needed. If something still doesn’t click, I’ll explain it a different way until it does.
A normal session is one main topic—like solving equations, functions, or derivatives. We warm up with a quick review, work through examples together, then shift to the student doing most of the work with me guiding. I always finish with a quick recap so they leave knowing exactly what to practice.
What I think makes me different is I don’t treat math like a memorization subject. With my civil engineering background and EIT, I can connect a lot of this to how it actually shows up in real work, which helps it feel less abstract. I also try to keep things relaxed—no pressure, no judgment, just working through it.
I work with middle school, high school, and early college students in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, whether they’re struggling, trying to improve grades, or just want more confidence in math.
