About Melissa

My saxophone teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that technical mastery and creative expression are not opposing forces but essential complements in a musician’s journey. Working with students at all levels—from those taking their first breath to those preparing advanced jazz solos—I tailor instruction to their goals and learning styles. We begin with fundamentals: breath control for phrasing, embouchure development for tone, finger coordination for fluency, and rhythmic articulation for clarity. Intonation and dynamic shading are integrated early, guiding students toward expressive nuance. Improvisation becomes a cornerstone of lessons, introduced through melodic games, scale pattern work, and chord exploration that empower students to create and speak musically. Music theory is embedded within performance, giving context to harmonic and modal choices as students play. I encourage learners to explore a varied repertoire—from bebop to ballads, funk to film cues—so lessons remain engaging and relevant. Goal-setting is collaborative, whether focused on mastering a solo, preparing for recording, or developing a compositional voice. One of my most fulfilling experiences involved coaching a student through performance anxiety into delivering a heartfelt improvised solo at a community event—an achievement grounded in trust, technique, and expressive support. My aim is to cultivate saxophonists who combine technical skill, creative bravery, and artistic sincerity in their musical expression.

In my saxophone studio, I strive to create a space where students feel empowered to take ownership of their musical journey. I believe that learning an instrument is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about developing a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us.

I begin each lesson by assessing the student's current level and setting clear, achievable goals. This collaborative approach ensures that the student feels invested in their learning process and understands the purpose behind each exercise and piece of music. Technique is a priority in my teaching, but I also emphasize the importance of musicality. I encourage students to think beyond the notes on the page, to interpret the music with their own voice, and to connect emotionally with the repertoire. I incorporate a variety of musical styles into lessons, from classical etudes to contemporary pop songs, to expose students to different musical traditions and to keep lessons engaging.

For students interested in improvisation, I provide a structured approach that includes ear training, scale practice, and improvisation exercises. I believe that improvisation is a powerful tool for developing creativity and musical expression. Technology is a valuable asset in my teaching. I use recording devices to allow students to listen back to their performances, helping them identify areas for improvement and track their progress over time. I also utilize digital resources such as sheet music apps and metronomes to enhance practice sessions.

Beyond technical instruction, I aim to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment. I celebrate each student's achievements, no matter how small, and encourage them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. My ultimate goal is to help students become not only proficient saxophonists but also confident, expressive musicians who find joy in their musical journey.
