Natural - creating techniques and challenges, on-the-fly, to solidify my students' understanding of their academic subjects.

A good one-to-one tutor will establish the tutoring session as a safe place to ask questions, to learn that there are common interests between student and tutor. The relationship between a tutor and student should be different than the one between a teacher and student or a parent and child. A good tutor will foster a relationship with the student that side-steps the normal adolescent frustrations at “authority figures” (be they parent or teacher). Ideally, the student will see them as an aid and an ally, there to help them with difficulties. A role as a disciplinarian undermines this aspect of tutoring.

Trust a tutor to support you as the parent, defend your household and homework rules and to mediate as needed; essentially, they can be a buffer between a parent and child, mediating some of the more stressful aspects of adolescent struggles with school and authority.
