About Flannery

I graduated with a degree in dance in the United States and have also completed a 200 hour certification in Hatha Yoga. After being a French student myself, I decided to specialize in languages. I now teach American English online and am currently in TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language) training.

I structure my lessons from the idea of creating a comfortable environment for the students, that is to say, I adapt according to individual needs. I believe that learning a new language is more fluid if we prioritize conversation in order to be able to develop other linguistic tools such as grammar or writing. For this, I mainly give lessons in oral expression and comprehension while working on improvement of the accent. I can also structure sessions based on the individual desire and goals of each student.

  • Parlez-vous couramment cette langue en raison de vos origines ou parce qu'un professeur vous a donné envie de l'apprendre ?

I was born and raised on the East Coast of the United States and for the first 21 years of my life, I exclusively spoke English. I now speak English and French fluently along with having an advanced level of Brazilian Portuguese. Teaching E.S.L. and exchanging with people from all over the world has only made me more curious to keep learning new languages!
  • Citez le personnage vivant, historique ou fictif qui est, selon vous, le représentant emblématique de la culture en question !

Shakespeare comes to mind when thinking about the history of the English language and English literature. His work can be found everywhere. It is woven into contemporary works of fiction, films, and pop culture allowing him to stay relevant. It is still incredibly valuable to have some knowledge of his work as an English learner.

A contemporary author I love is Ocean Vuong. I always recommend his pieces to my intermediate/advanced students. His unique perspective and mixture of poetry and prose shines an often unexpected light on the modern United States.
  • Y-a-t-il, dans celle-ci, un mot, une expression, une tradition ou un comportement typique qui vous amuse particulièrement ?

An expression I often use when speaking with friends and family is "Gotcha!". It is the contraction of another expression, "Got you" and means "Yes, I understand".
  • En quoi savoir parler cette langue est important, que ce soit scolairement, professionnellement ou d'un point de vue plus personnel ?

English is often referred to as the international business language. Although undoubtedly true, it can be so much more than that. Being able to effectively communicate in English will give you the opportunity to connect with people from many different backgrounds, in many different situations. From pursuing new job opportunities to back-packing around the world, English is unquestionably one of the most useful tools you can have in your toolkit!
  • Quelle est la difficulté principale de cette langue et ce qui peut favoriser son apprentissage ?

Compared to many languages, English grammar can seem relatively simple. The difficulty of English comes with the vocabulary. English speakers use an extraordinarily diverse vocabulary, often saying exactly the same thing in many different ways. For my students, this often comes up when trying to learn and understand the application of "phrasal verbs". For native speakers, these verbs often replace the standard form of the verb that is typically taught in English language classes.
  • Une anecdote en rapport avec votre métier ou votre scolarité à nous raconter ?

I have students spread across France, Europe and even a few in South America. Whenever I travel, especially to a new region in France, I ask my local students for recommendations of restaurants, landmarks etc. Thanks to their tips, I feel I now have an excellent grasp of the geography of the country and I have even become a little bit French! Funnily enough, sometimes even my French friends ask me for recommendations because they know I have all the contacts!
  • Aidez-nous à vous connaître un peu mieux en évoquant vos différents voyages.

Apart from living in the United States and in France, I spent 6 months in the northeastern part of Brazil. This experience changed the course of my life and is also where I learned to speak Brazilian Portuguese, a language that I regularly practice today. These experiences of being completely immersed in a new culture and seeing the arc of language learning-- from zero to fluency-- today help me understand and empathize with my students.
  • Qu'est-ce qui fait de vous un Superprof, en + de cette capacité à s'exprimer en plusieurs langues ?

Nowadays we can find books translated and films subtitled, we can use translator apps to read a menu and interpreters for official meetings. But, ultimately, none of these possibilities replace the ability to understand and exchange in a foreign language. When we learn a foreign language, in this case English, we are suddenly able to draw our own conclusions, understand jokes, ask for directions when lost, and defend ourselves in business meetings. I hope to help my students feel not just comfortable speaking English, but confident defending their opinions, making others laugh, and sharing their own cultures.
