American Studies Ph.D. and Freelance Writer and Tutor available for college essay coaching, SAT/ACT Prep (Reading, Writing, English), English (high school and college literature), and American History

Methodology

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the desire and firm commitment to give what I know to my students and based in the belief that, above all, education must be an empowering process for students. These values extend to my approach to teaching everything from communication skills through literature and literature/history (American Studies). In this way, “empowerment” means that students not only develop and enhance their basic skills for their career development (for example, employers continuously state that communication skills are paramount in evaluating prospective employees) but also that students emerge from my classes with a stronger sense of who they are and of the world in which they live.

Background

I am an American Studies Ph.D., and over the years, I have taught a great number and range of English, Writing and U.S. History courses to a very diverse body of students in the New York/New Jersey Area.

I work as a private tutor working with students ranging from middle school to graduate school on English, Writing, U.S. History, SAT Reading and Writing, and ACT English. I am presently working as an online tutor providing college essay coaching. I also recently tutored Chinese students in English online. Additionally, I work as a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader.

From 2014-2016, I worked for Honors Review and Advanced Education Institute (both located in Marlboro, NJ) as an individual and class tutor in a range of subjects.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the desire and firm commitment to give what I know to my students and based in the belief that, above all, education must be an empowering process for students.

I am expert in English grammar and punctuation. I am fluent in the various rhetorical modes – both as a teacher and writer – and I have an acute awareness of, as well as technical skill with, the ever-changing and newly developing platforms for student and professional writing in the twenty-first century.

I developed and taught an American Studies course (U.S. History and Literature) at FIT. I also have a wealth of experience teaching English Composition, Developmental, and other writing courses at both county colleges and universities.

Four years ago, I wrote a writing curriculum for the KEC Learning Center in Warren, NJ. I then implemented the course, working with middle and high school students on both expository and creative writing.

I find classroom teaching and one-on-one tutoring equally challenging and rewarding.
