About Robert

I have 5 years of PhD work in American Studies under my belt as well as an MA in American Studies, all with a 4.0 GPA. My Master's thesis examines opinions on and reactions to the mid 20th century population rise in the context of the Cold War.

I am the recipient of an American Studies Merit Scholarship and the James M. McCutcheon Memorial Fund Scholarship for American Studies.

My BA in English comes from the University of Oregon.

Having received offers to pursue my doctorate on academic merit scholarship at both the George Washington University and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, I elected UHM so that I could study with scholars such as Yale's David Stannard and Robert Perkinson, Brown's Mari Yoshihara and Jonna Eagle, and UHM's Noenoe Silva, all of whom I have worked with closely including on scholarship, teaching, grading, and the preparation of applications.

I achieved 98th percentile on my GRE subject of English, and still argue that I was right on that one question ;)

For one year, I was the Managing Editor of the most prestigious academic journal in the field of American Studies: "American Quarterly," published by Johns Hopkins University Press.

As a graduate instructor, I co-taught American History, Cinema History, Religious History, and Indigenous Studies, and was a guest lecturer in America and the World. I was also an invited lecturer at the 2020 Youth Climate Conference at UHM. My work is published in many outlets and cited in multiple texts and articles.

Prior to graduate school I worked in the Hollywood film industry for nearly a decade as a cross-cultural intermediary between American and foreign filmmakers.

Reviews from my college students:

"Robert was great, I couldn't have asked for a better instructor. He would push us and challenge us and most of all when this pandemic changed the entirety of student life he was empathetic."

"Robert always tried to hear from all students and pose thought provoking questions. He would also try to guide discussions if students were struggling with course material."

"I appreciated that Robert encouraged those who didn't like to speak to participate in the discussions. I also appreciated that he did not discourage anyone's perspective."

"Robert was very excellent. He was very professional did extra work to make sure I did well in this class."

"I really enjoyed this semester and loved having the opportunity to engage in course discussions with such a knowledgeable and capable Grad Instructor. He did a great job structuring and directing the discussions, making the classes interesting, effective, and entertaining."

Together we will go over materials that you need to learn, and/or I will give you materials to read, listen to, or watch, and we will discuss them in the style of a graduate seminar.

Having taught hundreds of college students, it is obvious which ones are engaged and interested and have put in outside effort to expand their breadth of knowledge and which ones have not. The ones who have done so get higher grades and enjoy being in class, and the ones who have not get low grades and sit there wishing they were playing video games or something.

Start putting in the extra effort and finding your intrinsic motivation now and you will be better off in the long term.
