I have over 1000 hours of one-to-one tutoring experience of GCSE and A-level science and maths. My students have come from a wide variety of backgrounds, ability levels, and schools.
In addition:
I have coached and tutored graduate students and staff at the National Physical Laboratory. I can give students career advice as they require.
I have experience of teaching outdoor sports to children and am a qualified canoeing/kayaking coach.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I have a current Enhanced DBS certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?
I am a qualified canoeing and kayaking coach. The training involved different approaches to teaching.
- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am passionate about the physical sciences, and enjoy engaging, inspiring and teaching students in the hope that they will pursue science as a career. Science, in my view, is the greatest form of knowledge.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I mainly tutor Physics and Chemistry at A-level, IB, Pre-U, and University entrance. I am familiar Edexcel, IB, OCR, CIE and AQA syllabuses. Also, I tutor mathematics and core further mathematics at A level. I am have mainly worked with the Edexcel syllabus for maths.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry (first class) and a PhD in Physical Chemistry, both from Nottingham University. I hold the TQUK Level 3 Training and Education Award. Until 2014, I was a research scientist at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for 24 years. The NPL is the UK's National Measurement Institute, and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology. As a result, I have real hands on experience in applied science, and have a considerable depth of scientific understanding. Recently, I have undertaken research at the Chinese National Measurement Institute, which has helped keep my science research skills up to date.
- How much do you charge?
£30 per hour for A level, IB and University entrance. £35 for undergraduate level Chemistry.
- Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at the student's residence. I live in Hampton, Middlesex, near Richmond-upon-Thames. I am happy to travel within a 20 mile radius.
- When are you available?
I am available most evenings and weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I mainly teach year 9 and older, although happy to teach younger students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
A-level, IB, Pre-U and University Entrance in Chemistry and Physics and Maths at A level. Possibly undergraduate Chemistry depending on the subject area.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I use Skype for conversation. I have a graphics tablet for on-screen maths. This is a new area for me, so eager to build some experience.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
The best way to revise depends on the student. I suggest a mixture of
- Background reading (textbooks, popular science books)
- Make notes as you read the above
- Experimental work (maybe buy a chemistry set or microscope).
- Practise exam questions
- Write a revision plan
- Study the syllabus document for your particular exam
For students, I recommend reading and rereading the textbooks and practise end of chapter questions and past exam papers. Try to revise and learn the subjects as you go along, and not leave revision until the last few weeks before exams. Your exam grades are proportional to the amount of study time you put in - there are no short cuts. Many students underestimate the amount of study needed to achieve the highest grades.
