About Amlan

As a maths PhD student at St Andrews, I am currently teaching real analysis to four undergraduate tutorial groups at the university, and have received very positive feedback. I recently passed with Distinction an MSc in Mathematics at St Andrews, and last year I graduated with a Mathematics degree from King’s College, Cambridge. I have an outstanding academic record, including 4 A* at A level (Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry), 11 A* at GCSE, and Grade 1 in all three STEP papers, so I know what it takes to achieve the very top grades. I have tutored undergraduate mathematics (analysis and statistics) with Oxford Exclusif Tutorial Agency, and periodically return to my comprehensive school Sixth Form to help students prepare for Oxbridge entrance exams (for which many schools offer very little help), with good results.

Hi there! I'm Amlan, and I tutor maths at all levels of secondary school education including Higher/Advanced Higher/A level and National 5/GCSE, as well as undergraduate level. I also offer tutorial sessions for STEP, MAT, and other tests you may be taking, and can give first-hand advice about the Oxbridge admissions process. I tutor many areas of maths, including algebra, calculus, analysis, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and more.

I genuinely believe that with the right teacher and hard work, any student can excel. I strive to make the rich subject of maths both interesting and understandable, even for those who might not have found it so before, by breaking down problems into manageable pieces, and minimising the use of confusing notation and terminology. We will tackle the problems together, rather than me just giving an answer, because the only way to learn maths is to get stuck in (a rewarding experience in itself). I help students to develop a genuine understanding of the underlying ideas behind a problem, rather than just to memorise techniques. After a question, instead of just moving on, I work with the student to see if we can draw any links with other topics, or take away general concepts that can be applied to future problems. This improves understanding and improves results!

I know what it’s like to be stuck on a challenging problem, so I will spend as long as necessary to make sure that you have understood. In the first meeting, we will discuss your strengths and weaknesses and, together, come up with a study plan. I provide feedback on students’ work and advise what can be done to improve. I am flexible about the topics to be considered, and willing to use my extensive mathematical knowledge to discuss topics beyond the syllabus if this will be helpful to you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this; if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
