About Julia

I have been in private practice teaching singing, piano, songwriting and acting for 24 years. I started my practice in Brooklyn and I am still in Park Slope. Before I started teaching I got a BFA in Musical Theatre from SUNY Fredonia, I went to London to study Shakespeare and British singing technique. I did a bunch of National Tours of Musicals leaving from NYC, I got a Master's degree from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and then another Master's degree in Vocal Performance from Brooklyn College. My professors at Brooklyn College hired me back after I graduated to do some Operas and Musicals. In 2019 I was hired by Brooklyn College again to musically direct Tick Tick Boom. I was hired to sing at Carnegie Hall with an Opera Company that wrote a 10-minute comic Opera for me that premiered in their Opera Shorts program and subsequently hired me to sing in the Opera Shorts programs for the next 5 years (2011-2016). I sang in an indie pop band call the 20% Tippers in the 90s... we gigged around NYC and I left the band to do my first National Tour of Christmas Carol. I started Grace Music Studio NY in April of 1999 after having been traveling with my meditation teacher in India and asking her should I start teaching singing.. she said Yes! At first it was just a theory that anyone can learn to sing and I was on a mission to prove it. And now, 24 years in, I have seen it over and over again that it is true and I feel so grateful to be able to serve my students in this way.

About the lesson

Hi there
I have been teaching adults and kids how to sing for 24 years. I have a BFA and two Master's degrees in Voice, I have sung at Carnegie Hall many times and have had two Operas written for me...but these are NOT the reasons to study singing with me... (they are just up front to let you know that I know my stuff).

The BIG reason to study singing with me is I LOVE helping people learn to sing and I have developed, over the past 24 years, a completely unique and holistic method that works for everyone, no matter their age and no matter their level and for every style including Pop, Classical, R&B, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Rock, Opera, Country, Folk, etc..

I believe it is everyone's birthright to be able to learn to sing well. Teaching singing is my passion and I especially love helping those who think they can't or those who are very advanced singers (professional or not) who have come across a snag in their technique and they need help getting their voice 'back".

I work with Adults and kids as young as 5. We learn to sing the styles the student is passionate about and if a student wants to learn how to read music or learn some piano, or how to sing and play or write their own songs I offer all of those as well. It's really about helping people express the music we all have inside us in a way that's fun and empowering.
