About David
I'm a UC Berkeley graduate in Applied Mathematics and a Senior Software Engineer currently at Amazon Robotics, with over 7 years of professional experience building complex systems at companies including Walmart and Doble Engineering. I'm also an Eagle Scout — a distinction that reflects a lifelong commitment to discipline, mentorship, and showing up prepared. I bring that same rigor and reliability to every tutoring session. My background isn't just academic: I use mathematics daily in my career, which means I can show students not just how to solve a problem, but why it matters beyond the classroom. You're welcome to verify my credentials on LinkedIn at (concealed information) — I believe transparency is part of being a trustworthy tutor. Every student deserves someone who is qualified, consistent, and genuinely invested in their progress.

My teaching approach is rooted in one principle: understanding before procedure. I never open with formulas — every topic starts with the "why," building intuition so students stop memorizing steps and start reasoning through problems.
With a degree in Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley and over 7 years working as a software professional, I bring a perspective most tutors can't: I've actually used this math in the real world. I connect algebra, calculus, and statistics to programming, data, and engineering, so the subject stops feeling abstract and starts feeling relevant.
A typical 60-minute lesson follows a clear structure: we open with a short review of last session, I introduce the new concept visually and with an analogy before touching any equations, then we work through problems together — I ask guiding questions rather than giving answers, so the thinking stays with the student. The last portion of the session is solo practice while I observe, which is where real gaps reveal themselves. We close with a brief recap and a small exercise to try before our next meeting.
What sets me apart: I explain things multiple ways. If one approach doesn't click, I have three more ready. Every brain is different, and I adapt until something lands. I also track each student's weak areas across sessions and share brief notes so both students and parents can see clear progress over time.
These lessons are designed for students in grades 8–12 covering Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus (including AP AB and BC), and Statistics. I also offer focused SAT and ACT math preparation. Whether you're falling behind, aiming to improve your grade, or preparing for AP exams, these sessions are built around where you actually are — not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
