About Thomas
My name is Thomas O’Neill, and I am a PhD student in Applied Mathematics at Stony Brook University, specializing in Operations Research. I am passionate about making math approachable and even enjoyable, especially for students who have found it intimidating in the past. Over the past several years, I have taught and tutored at both the high school and university levels, including 2.5 years as a physics teaching assistant at the University of Rochester and a summer teaching Algebra I to middle and high school students through the Uncommon Schools network. My own academic journey has taken me through every honors-level math class in school, advanced coursework in college, and now doctoral-level research, giving me a deep understanding of the subject from multiple perspectives. Outside of academics, I am a lifelong Boston sports fan, a former ice hockey and lacrosse player, and the proud owner of two cats. I strive to bring the same patience, curiosity, and encouragement to tutoring that I value in my own learning.

As a tutor, I focus on building understanding step-by-step, ensuring students feel confident with each concept before moving forward. A typical lesson begins with a brief review of prior material, followed by targeted instruction on the current topic, and ends with guided problem-solving where students apply what they have learned. I tailor each session to the individual’s needs, whether it’s filling in gaps, challenging advanced learners, or preparing for exams. My background as a PhD student in Applied Mathematics specializing in Operations Research allows me to connect abstract ideas to real-world applications, making lessons more engaging and relevant. I work with middle school, high school, and college students, and I particularly enjoy helping those who have struggled with math in the past discover their own ability to succeed.
