About Michael
I have a first class BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Strathclyde. For my dissertation, I ran computer simulations to study the behaviour of ferrofluid droplets in magnetic fields. Afterwards, I received some funding from the British Society of Rheology to continue building on that work, before I switched to the maths department to study for a PhD. I am now in the final stages of writing up my PhD thesis, which is focused on developing equations to describe interactions between drops in electric fields.
I'm a friendly, easy-going person and I like teaching in a relaxed manner, without lots of pressure or stress. I have a natural passion for understanding how we can use tools like maths to describe the natural world, and would be delighted to share it with you.
Please feel free to get in touch if you think I could be of help to you, and we'll discuss your requirements and see what I can do!

I think subjects with a strong focus on problem solving benefit from a highly active, hands-on approach to learning. As such, the focus should be on working through practice problems in past papers, textbooks and so on. This way, you'll have much more confidence approaching similar questions you'll find in your exams.
However, it's important also to understand why problems are solved the way they are, as opposed to simply remembering the correct formulas to solve them. This helps develop a deeper fluency and appreciation for the subject, while making you a much more flexible problem solver.
Therefore, lessons with me will involve getting lots of practice working through problems just like those you'll see in your exams, in a friendly and supportive environment. I'll be there to guide you along the way, helping you make connections between new ideas and those you're already comfortable with, so that these new ideas don't seem so daunting, and eliciting lots of "aha" moments!
I have tutoring experience ranging from helping full classes of undergraduate maths students to individual high school age students. I like to think I have a knack for explaining complicated ideas in a simple and familiar way, drawing analogies with everyday concepts, so that you can use your intuition and previous experience to really understand the big picture.
Lessons will be pre-planned and carefully tailored to each student, but retaining enough flexibility to spend time focusing on your particular needs. Lessons would be generally around an hour, but could also be a bit shorter or longer as you prefer. I'm happy to help over zoom, or in person, in or around Glasgow.
