About Maisie

I am an archaeologist and recent graduate from the University of York with a master's in bioarchaeology. My undergraduate degrees in archaeology and biology were obtained at the University of Wisconsin: La Crosse and the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities.

Teaching is of great importance to me as I hope to eventually teach at the university level. I was also a student who struggled, particularly in math, throughout most of my childhood. I did not receive tutoring until I was in high school and it was my first tutor who taught me the value of a patient and committed mentor. I started high school in the most basic math classes and graduated my senior year taking AP calculus because of this experience. As a result, my confidence grew and my passion for teaching was sparked. Thus, I began tutoring other students during high school.

I also understand the struggle for students who are visual learners or who require extra practice problems for a concept to stick and the frustration that comes with being left behind, which may lead to the desire to give up. I have found that even the smallest victories, like going from a D average on quizzes to a C average, create a domino effect where the student becomes more motivated and eager to work at the problem more to see gradual, incremental growth.

About the lesson

I worked approximately 5 years at a privately owned, small tutoring business. I tutored students of all ages and in all subjects. However, I was primarily the STEM tutor for middle school and high school students. I worked with students to develop study skills and plans. My job entailed checking students' grades and planners at the beginning of the session and making sure they had assignments for the week written down. I have experience working with students of all backgrounds. Some students have learning disabilities, others struggle with certain subjects, some are in summer school every year, and others are studious and want extra homework.

A typical session consists of addressing homework first and, if time allows, finding extra worksheets or giving an introductory lesson for upcoming material. If students prefer, the session may also be broken in half to focus on separate subjects.
