My name is John, I was born and raised in Paris, France. I have graduated with honors from Ecole Nationale Supérieur d’Architecture Paris Val de Seine with a Master of Architecture. During the last two years of my master studies, my focuses were concentrated on three main works:
First, the « Sensory Pavilion » a building coming from the soil, thanks to the material: Its mainly composed by « rammed earth », also called Pisé, and burnt wood with the purpose to provide different sensitives interactions between the place and the sensitive body of the visitors: the pavilion has been conceived for people who lost one of the five senses, and allowed
them to exalt those that remain to them.
My thesis centered around the distillation of place through space and light, focused to understand what is an atmosphere
and how it is created. I worked from a base study in Peter Zumthor’s Atmospheres, using personal experiences to understand how the atmospheres Zumthor develops in his buildings make a parallel with what is described in text.
My diploma project takes context and community to breathe life into a small town which was known for being drawn to the art and minimalism of Donald Judd. Marfa is a point in the middle of the desert, a space of cleavage between regional cultures, a place where a minimal conversation between people, things, and time should take place: bringing together people with beauty and functionalism among such a uniquely distinct context. Moreover, Marfa is a land where the genius loci, extend to the desert context, reveals itself to the city in an intense way. This project has been for me a way to experiment the notions of atmosphere, place and experience, of the somatic body with the interest in detail carried to a larger scale in an exceptional context.
The eye I have for architecture evolved a lot during my life: through reflections and questioning about spaces and what this means for architecture today. It has provided me a sensibility and confirmation about the essence of what is architecture and where it should go.
