I have been a bilingual instructor for three years. I have lived in Canada and in the United Kingdom. What I have learned from my years in teaching is that the ideal class should be dynamic and not just based on textbooks. Currently there are many technological support resources to use in class, such as videos, podcasts, or games. A good class must start on time, it must be planned to carry out different activities throughout the session and it must have a closing activity to recapitulate each element of the class. The teacher's job is to find varied resources to be able to adapt to the student's way of learning.
Each student has a different learning pace, it is vital to monitor the student's ability before advancing to other lessons, especially when these are quantitative, and they will need that knowledge to understand more advanced concepts.
What I have learned from living in different English-speaking countries is that despite knowing a lot of theory, nothing compares to a real conversation with an individual, regardless of accent or synonyms used. Listening comprehension is a tool that can be improved in many ways, but the best way in my experience is through exposure to the language in any form, be it in a song, in a video or in a conversation.
