About Joseph
I'm a visual artist based in Manhattan. I studied fine art, have exhibited my work in several shows in Manhattan and have work in the permanent collection of MoMA.
My own practice is rooted in close observation and a deep respect for craft. I've spent years developing my work across various mediums, and I'm always learning from the artists who came before me. Art history isn't a side subject for me. It's how I understand what I'm doing in the studio.
That's the approach I bring to teaching. I believe good art comes from strong fundamentals, close looking and knowing the tradition you're working in. My goal is to give every student a solid foundation and the confidence to develop their own voice.

I'm a visual artist with work in the permanent collection of MoMA. My lessons are built around three things: strong fundamentals, an understanding of art history and learning to see by studying the real thing.
I teach drawing, painting and sculpture, along with an introduction to printmaking. Whatever the medium, we start with the fundamentals. Line, form, color, light and composition. These are the skills everything else is built on, and we take the time to get them right.
Alongside the practical work, we look at the history of art. Knowing how artists before us solved the same problems gives you a deeper toolkit and a better sense of where your own work fits.
We also take trips to museums around New York for research. Standing in front of a work and studying it closely teaches things no book or screen can.
Lessons are open to all levels, whether you're just starting out or looking to grow your practice.
