About Kayla

My saxophone teaching philosophy is grounded in fostering both technical excellence and expressive freedom in every student. I prioritize the fundamentals: breath support, embouchure stability, finger agility, posture, tone quality, articulation, and intonation. These core skills provide the framework for healthy and versatile playing. From early lessons, improvisation is integrated to encourage creativity and musical intuition. I use exercises that develop ear training, pattern recognition, and spontaneous phrasing, helping students gain confidence and fluency. Music theory is taught contextually, connected directly to the music students are playing or improvising, making abstract concepts accessible and relevant. Repertoire is carefully tailored to each student’s musical tastes and goals, ranging from jazz standards and blues to popular tunes and classical works. I emphasize goal-setting and consistent practice habits to foster long-term growth and motivation. I also utilize modern technology such as recording devices, metronomes, and digital backing tracks to enhance practice and self-reflection. One of the most rewarding experiences in my teaching was helping a student prepare for and succeed in a regional jazz festival, witnessing their growth in both skill and confidence. My commitment is to develop saxophonists who are technically proficient, creatively inspired, and passionate about their music.

Teaching saxophone offers a unique opportunity to blend technical skill with creative expression, and I strive to foster both in every lesson. I emphasize developing healthy breathing techniques, embouchure strength, precise articulation, finger dexterity, and a rich tone to build a sustainable foundation for all genres.

Alongside technical skills, I introduce music theory, sight-reading, and ear training from the outset to develop well-rounded musicianship and prepare students for improvisation and ensemble work. I personalize lessons based on each student’s interests and goals, whether they are passionate about jazz improvisation, blues phrasing, funk grooves, or contemporary pop.

Improvisation is a major focus; I help students build confidence by breaking down scales, melodic motifs, rhythm variations, and phrasing techniques. I use technology including recording tools, slow-downer apps, and play-along tracks to support practice and self-evaluation. Performance skills such as stage presence, managing anxiety, and emotional communication are integrated into lessons to prepare students for live playing.

I create a nurturing environment where students feel safe to experiment, make mistakes, and grow creatively. One standout teaching success was mentoring a student who overcame early technical hurdles to become a confident jazz band soloist, demonstrating the power of personalized, patient instruction. My goal is to help each student become a technically skilled, expressive saxophonist who enjoys sharing their music with confidence and passion.
