About Courtney

Hi! I'm Courtney from northern New Jersey (born and raised). I have an A.S. in Social Sciences, a B.A. in History, an M.A. in Educational Studies, and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Administration. I am looking forward to adding a Doctor in Education in Organizational Leadership to complete the cycle in the near future. Though I’m addicted to learning, I’m sure this isn’t the final destination.

Just before the end of my twelfth year as a high school history teacher, I officially began my new position as Assistant Principal at an alternative school. Before teaching, I had a career in high-end retail management that allowed me to interact with various clientele daily. However, as a teacher, I have found my niche and truly feel I’m making a difference in someone’s life. I’m hoping that with an education doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership, I can take my skills and love of children to another level and make a difference in not only their lives but the lives of the teachers and support staff that assist them daily.

In my spare time, which I don’t get much of, I enjoy reading, hanging out with friends, and just relaxing. My lack of spare time is because my family keeps me busy. I have a 24-year-old son who completed his B.S. at NJIT as a Chemistry major in May 2023 and a 16-year-old daughter who is almost at the finish line of her sophomore year and activities (student council, freshman council, and the school choir). Oh, and I can't forget our four Chorkie puppies, Lillipup, Gizmo, Luna, and Waffles, whom we adopted after our precious Yorkie Dakota died. They are all cute, annoying, spoiled Chorkies! We are also very active parishioners of our church, where my children and I serve as acolytes, and I am also a Eucharistic Minister and Sunday School Teacher. As for books, I enjoy the following authors: Philippa Gregory, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Alexander Chee, along with other writers of fiction, historical fiction, and non-fiction books. I lived in Japan as an exchange student in high school in my youth. As a high school history teacher, I’ve started a global excursion program wherein June 2016, we traveled to Italy, in June 2017 to Beijing, June 2019 to London, Paris, and Rome. Our 2020 trip to Japan has been pushed back to June 2021 and now has been pushed to June 2022, so I’m looking forward to going back to my second home. I believe that experiencing the world makes for a more rounded individual. (Update, the trip to Japan has been canceled due to COVID; however, we are preparing for our 2023 trip to South Africa!!!). My nickname is The Globetrotter!!

Explain your approach as a tutor and how you share your knowledge:

- My teaching methods include a combination of Teacher-centred, Learner-centred, Content-focused, and Interactive/participative methods. The techniques used include but are not limited to differentiated instruction, lecture-based learning, technology-based learning, group learning, individual learning, inquiry-based learning, auditory/visual/kinesthetic learning, game-based learning, and expeditionary learning.

- Lesson plans are designed based on the needs of the students.

- I know that being a doctoral candidate may provide an air of stuffy and boring, but I am the complete opposite. I am a parent, dog mom, and lover of the world that enjoys sharing my enthusiasm for the social sciences with my students.

- Lessons can be designed for students in grades K-12.
