About Joanna
I am a scientist and an educator, and I enjoy working with students in a broad age range – middle school through university, to help them fully understand their subject material. This enables students to apply the material, and I see students light up in joy when they get that understanding. I teach and tutor basic subjects (like algebra and middle/high school geometry), intermediate subjects (pre-calc, calculus, AP chemistry, and undergraduate physics), and many advanced subjects (organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and advanced physics courses). Finally, I work with students in non-traditional subjects including astronomy research projects and scientific computing.
I majored in astrophysics at Columbia University and got my Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Virginia. I have taught undergraduate physics at a major state university in Florida. My research was on the organic chemistry that occurs in giant clouds of gas that are forming stars. My work included a significant amount of computer coding and data analysis, while my academic study included advanced subjects in physics, math, and chemistry.
This work also included scientific paper writing and research project design. In fact, I have designed and implemented a research program for high school students to do astronomy research using data from some of the world’s premier telescopes.

My teaching methodology is driven by comprehensibility and applicability. To comprehend a subject or some part of a subject, the student must first be able to relate to it. He or she should see examples of how it works, and then to see for themselves that it does work and can be used. My teaching uses examples and problem solving, points out relationships and corollaries between different parts of a subject, and draws on what the students can observe in the world around them.
My presentation of material really focuses on student understanding and interest. I design my teaching to produce clarity, and I get students to demonstrate their understanding to ensure that they are mastering the material. I have observed that when a student doesn't understand a single part of a subject, the entire subject becomes more difficult.
Finally, my teaching should be fun and the student should be able to have fun with the material. Good education is never dull! I engage students, and my students feel good about themselves in my courses.
With these aspects combined, I have had great success with students. In the words of a student in my undergraduate physics course on the last day of class, "I tried to take physics in the summer with another professor and I couldn't understand anything he was teaching. With you, I learned physics! Thank you!"
