About Sebastian

Music has been a huge part of my life, and I particularly enjoy the variety that comes from being involved in many different areas of music. I am especially interested in choral and organ music, and I regularly accompany my school choir for Evensong as well as playing voluntaries for services. I particularly enjoy accompanying singers and instrumentalists, as I find that making music collaboratively requires a completely different kind of listening and musicianship from performing as a soloist.

I love exploring a wide range of repertoire, from Bach, Mozart, Chopin and Rachmaninov to chamber music and jazz. I have particularly enjoyed performing works such as Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, Poulenc’s Sextet and Brahms’ Violin Sonatas, as well as accompanying a wide variety of instrumental repertoire.

Jazz is another particular interest of mine. I formed a jazz band at school and have enjoyed performing standards both in smaller ensembles and as part of the Big Band, including helping to organise and perform at our annual Jazz Night. I particularly enjoy the freedom and spontaneity of jazz and the different kind of listening it requires.

I became increasingly interested in the organ and church music after taking up the instrument in late 2024. Since then, I have had opportunities to perform in recitals and at services, including at Sydney Town Hall and the Temple Church in London. I hope to continue developing as an organist and become increasingly involved in choral and church music during university.

What I enjoy most about music is that there is always something new to discover. Whether it is learning unfamiliar repertoire, finding a new way of interpreting something I already know, or making music with other people, I am always curious about what I can learn next.

I try to make music lessons enjoyable, practical and tailored to each student. Whether a student is working towards an examination or simply wants to understand music better, I adapt lessons to their interests, level and individual areas for development.

For Music Theory, I like to explain concepts clearly before putting them into practice. I use questions, examples and pieces of real music to make sure students understand the ideas rather than simply memorising rules. I place particular emphasis on showing how theoretical concepts actually appear in music that students hear and play, as I find this makes theory much more intuitive and memorable.

My experience as a pianist, violinist and organist, as well as my experience playing in orchestras and accompanying other musicians, allows me to approach theory from a practical musical perspective. I can draw on real repertoire and performance experience to explain why a particular harmonic, rhythmic or structural idea matters, rather than treating theory as something completely separate from playing music.

Lessons are typically 45–60 minutes, depending on the student’s age and level. I teach Music Theory from Grades 1–8 and can work with students preparing for examinations as well as those studying theory out of personal interest.

I hold ATCL Diplomas in both Piano and Violin, and have achieved Grade 8 with Distinction on the organ. I have also taught Music Theory for over 10 years, giving me extensive experience helping students of different levels develop both their theoretical understanding and confidence.
