About Donna
I am a practicing attorney with many years of experience analyzing complex documents, researching difficult questions and writing persuasive arguments. My legal training has strengthened the same skills students need to succeed in literature, writing and analytical thinking: careful reading, logical thinking, clear organization and effective communiciation.
In addition to my legal career, I have spend many years studying literature, history, religion, social sciences and world cultures.
I enjoy helping students discover that reading is not simply about memorizing facts-it is about understanding ideas and learning how to think independently.

I help students become stronger readers, thinkers and writers.
My lessons focus on reading comprehension, literary analysis, essay writing, critical thinking and persuasive writing.
Whether you are studying Jane Austen, Toni Morrison, Leo Tolstoy, Gwendolyn Brooks, Bessie Head, Chinua Acebe, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, James Baldwin or Simone de Beauvoir, I help students read, comprehend and synthesize the material.
Every student learns differently. During the first lesson, I identify where the student has difficulty. It may be vocabulary or understanding an author's purpose. At other times the student understands the reading, but struggles to organize ideas into an essay.
Once we identity the difficulty, we work through it step by step, using discussion, close reading, guided questions and structured writing exercises. Now, texts that the student previously found difficult becomes manageable when they are broken into smaller parts and then I teach students how to ask questions that help them to understand and to retain the material.
My goal is not simply to improve one assignment, but to develop skills students can use for academic success throughout school and beyond.
