About Ren

I am a 33 year old choreographer and dancer myself, having worked in the field in the United States, Germany, and Portugal for a range of international choreographers. I know am focused on creating my own work, which I do with support from government arts funding, and have toured my last 3 works extensively across the EU and in NYC.

I received my BFA in Dance from UNC Greensboro in 2012, and worked in a small company in Washington DC for 4 years as a young dancer. In 2016, I moved to Germany and began working as a freelance dancer, navigating auditions constantly. I began working in several projects for a Greek choreographer which led me to dance frequently in Athens, and a Portuguese choreographer, with whom I still collaborate, and am currently rehearsing for a project which will tour Portugal next year.

I have a very international and interdisciplinary approach to dance, and have shared this knowledge with university students in Berlin at DIE ETAGE, Seneca Intensiv, in the US at Goddard College and the American Dance Festival, and as the National School of Music and Art in Porto, Portugal.

I am also a scholar and a humans right activist, and I bring these aspects into my artistic work as well. I am well versed on intersections between dance and politics, feminism, and international relations.

I am highly experienced in my field, and I am passionate about helping others find their place in the challenging, but exciting world of dance.

About the lesson

In these lessons, we will cater to the precise specifications of the audition(s) to which you are applying. Some auditions may have writing and interview portions as well, areas in which I am well versed and can provide additional coaching.

We will look at what physical requirements might be missing from your current dance practice and the most efficient ways to work on those elements. I have worked from 12 years as a contemporary dance, improvisation, and pilates teacher in both high school and university programs, as well as for professional dancers in the US and Europe, and I will pull from this wealth of knowledge to help you in the area you most need. I have been on juries several times for contemporary dance auditions and can also provide insight as to what schools or choreographers might be looking for. I have worked in the field for over a decade, and am also familiar with many other professionals in the field and their various ways of assessing dance.

In addition to crafting a physical plan for both quality of movement, strength, and mobility, we will also look deeper at the psychological aspects of undertaking this audition, and intention to study dance. I will offer tools to deal with audition anxiety and how to present the most authentic and grounded version of yourself in a challenging and high pressure situation.

Finally, we will look at the other requirements of the audition, perhaps an essay or an interview, and discuss you needs in those areas, developing practice essay and interviews questions which allow you to practice articulating yourself and your approach towards art and the body.
