About Ryan
I’m Ryan, an award-recognized screenwriter, filmmaker, and film studies tutor with both academic training and real-world creative experience. I hold a degree in Business Communications with a minor in Cinema Theory and Production, and I’ve spent years working across writing, film analysis, and visual storytelling in both academic and professional settings. My screenwriting work has been recognized by international competitions and film festivals, and my filmmaking experience spans development, production, and post-production. This blend of theory and practice allows me to teach film and writing with clarity, structure, and relevance—whether a student is preparing for coursework, developing an original script, or learning the fundamentals of storytelling. I approach tutoring with professionalism, preparation, and respect for each student’s goals. I value clear communication, thoughtful feedback, and a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking creative risks. Every lesson is tailored, focused, and designed to help students make measurable progress. I take pride in being reliable, organized, and fully invested in my students’ success. My aim is not only to teach skills, but to help students build confidence in their analytical thinking and creative voice.

My approach as a tutor is grounded in the belief that strong storytelling comes from understanding both theory and practice. Whether we’re analyzing a film or developing an original piece of writing, I focus on helping students understand why something works—not just how to do it. I combine academic film analysis with hands-on creative exercises so students build confidence, clarity, and a personal voice.
I tailor my teaching to each student’s goals and learning style. Some students thrive with structured frameworks and close analysis, while others benefit from exploratory discussion and iterative feedback. I adapt my methods accordingly, always aiming to make complex ideas accessible, practical, and engaging.
A typical lesson is structured but flexible and usually includes:
A brief check-in to understand progress, challenges, or goals since the last session
Focused discussion or analysis (film scenes, scripts, essays, or excerpts)
Practical application, such as writing exercises, scene breakdowns, or story development
Constructive feedback with clear, actionable next steps
For creative writing and screenwriting students, lessons often involve developing ideas, refining structure, strengthening character, and improving dialogue. For film studies students, we may analyze films through historical, theoretical, or thematic lenses while building strong critical thinking and writing skills.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my combination of formal academic training in cinema theory, award-recognized screenwriting, and real-world filmmaking experience. I don’t teach film or writing as abstract subjects—I teach them as living crafts. I’ve worked through the creative process from concept to final product, and I help students do the same while avoiding common pitfalls.
I also emphasize clear communication, honest feedback, and encouragement. Writing and film can feel intimidating, and my goal is to create a space where students feel challenged but supported.
My lessons are well-suited for:
High school and university students studying film studies, media studies, or creative writing
Undergraduate students preparing essays, analyses, or creative projects
Aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers looking to develop scripts or storytelling fundamentals
Adult learners pursuing film and writing out of personal or professional interest
Lessons can be adapted for beginners or more advanced students, depending on experience level and objectives.
I’m Ryan, and my goal is to help students not only improve their skills, but also gain a deeper understanding of storytelling - on the page and on the screen.
