About Murph
I am a master teacher, and a tenured full professor, winning the New York State SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019. I have been teaching at the college level since 2001.
I engage students in active learning and for over fifteen years have been called upon to train, coach, and mentor other college faculty to make them more effective college instructors.
I have a Masters in European History from Cal State-East Bay, and my doctoral work in Modern German History was done at Penn State.
Additionally, for 28 years I was an Army officer, both on active duty and in the Army Reserves, where I learned to effectively teach and train in challenging environments.
My experience is both broad and deep, and I look forward to working with you.

My approach is based on helping students make connections with the past--training, coaching, and mentoring students to make them better learners and to help them make sense of the past. While mastery of the material is important, the real challenge is helping students learn to become master learners.
I have not only taught history for twenty years, but I have also taught college success courses, so I have a deep understanding of how students learn best and what systems students can set in place to ensure greater success and mastery of a discipline like history which many students find difficult at first.
Every lesson has a particular goal--whether it is summarizing material for a chapter, preparing strategies to read primary or secondary sources, researching a paper, or preparing for a test. Each lesson starts with a brief check-in, and then the bulk of the time is spent actively wrestling with the project at hand. The lesson ends with a summary of what the student has accomplished, and any steps needed to finish work on the goals we set collaboratively.
College students and upper-level high school students will benefit from working with me. I'm able to work with both general education students as well as more advanced history students
