About Smyth
My bylines have appeared in every major newspaper in the United States, along with appearing as well in online outlets and both legacy and online outlets abroad. I have written two books, one about negotiating the end to conflicts, the other about a group as old as baseball that has changed dramatically much like the nation over the past century and a half. I have long led seminars for high school students, and I have taught communications and history at two universities. I am professional, affable and have a healthy sense of humor. I know how to connect with people including kids, and how to keep them engaged.

I start with the basics: What interests you? Why don't you write about that? What do you want to say? Let's learn how to say it. Topic sentences, why they should lead nearly every paragraph. Thesis statements, why they hold the rest of the piece together. Passive voice and first person, why you should avoid using both. Stick to the same subject as part of a speech to make your writing clear. Adjectives, minimize their use to make your writing stronger.
