About the lesson

Whether you are an advanced RCM learner or you are looking to take up a new instrument for fun, I am here to help you achieve your musical goals! I equip my students with a strong musical foundation that enables them to learn music that they are passionate about, and to help them develop a consistent, efficient practice routine that allows for constant musical progress and growth. For beginner pianists, my go-to method book is Faber’s Piano Adventures. This book covers important basic concepts including sheet music reading skills, keyboard topography, and ear development that are paramount for student success. Beginner and young students are also given the opportunity to play many entertaining & educational musical games during their lessons to develop their creativity, knowledge, and passion for music. If my students leave their lesson feeling excited to go home and practice, then I have done my job! Some great educational apps for beginner to intermediate learners: - NoteRush - Staff Wars - Rhythm Trainer - Earpeggio - Music Crab - Baby Piano Late beginner to advanced students are given the option of going through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), which has a mainly classical music-oriented curriculum and exam for each level of the program. In preparation for RCM exams, students develop their technique and finger dexterity at the piano, and develop a theoretical understanding of music, as well as the ability to express emotions and ideas through musical elements like dynamics, tempo, rubato, shaping, articulation, and phrasing. For those wishing to study popular music genres, lessons will focus on chord formation, harmonization, lead sheets, choral music, and improvisation, all of which are important skills that give students the independence to be able to learn new songs on their own. Whether your focus is classical or popular music, performing in public is highly encouraged. It is an integral component of student progress, as it can solidify their grasp of their current repertoire and help develop stage presence and confidence. Students are encouraged to perform in RCM exams, Kiwanis Festival, student recitals, and volunteer to play at senior home concerts. Lastly, parental involvement in students’ musical journey is highly recommended; Parents play an important role in encouraging their children, helping them maintain a consistent practice schedule, and in celebrating their accomplishments and progress. The lessons with Miao went great! We chose to use the method book titled "Piano Adventures" (adult version, volume 1) for our lessons and also discussed some songs that Miao would like to work on. These included Yiruma's River Flows in You, Pachelbel's Canon in D, and Summer by Joe Hisaishi. Miao is a great student and a fast learner and I can't wait to continue working on these new songs together with her! :)

1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?
I began piano studies at the age of six, and I have always really enjoyed playing the piano, but I would say that I really started developing a passion for music when I discovered the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Liszt--some of my favorite composers today!
2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Honestly, no. After listening to something on a loop more than 5 or 6 times, the music feels dry and predictable and it loses the spontaneity and freshness it once had. Even in my practicing, I never play a piece the same way twice; I like to change things up--sometimes by modulating to different keys or improvising a new chord progression just to find out where the music can take me!
3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
I can help students from a beginner level to the advanced ARCT* or LRCM* RCM* levels. I can also help students prepare for their university auditions!

*ARCT = Associate Diploma of the Royal Conservatory of Music
*LRCM = Licentiate Diploma of the Royal Conservatory of Music
*RCM = Royal Conservatory of Music examination system
4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
I have only pursued advanced studies on piano and violin, so I really can't say anything about the other instruments. Looking back though, I would say that violin is much harder at the beginning when you are just starting to learn. It is very difficult to produce a beautiful sound on the violin because of things like having correct posture, bow hold and intonation. It takes time, dedication and focus to achieve these things, and it is easy to become frustrated when you can't do them properly. On the other hand, anyone can make a nice sound on the piano--all you have to do is press down the key! However, after mastering the basics and gaining a solid foundation on either instrument, the goal is to make beautiful music, and that is the most challenging thing of all, no matter what instrument you have.
5) What are your keys to success?
Be passionate about what you do! Also, self care and making sure that you pace yourself and are taking enough breaks is key to success and improvement!
6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
I don't have a favorite bar, but if I did have one I would love to meet Evgeny Kissin there! Besides being one of the top pianists and musicians on the planet, he is one of the most intelligent, genuine, and quirky people I have ever seen! Aside from Kissin, I would also love to meet the pianists Horowitz and Yuja Wang!
7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
I don't have any interesting stories from my undergraduate studies, but here is a great quote from Ludwig van Beethoven:
"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable."
8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
I have been teaching all kinds of music students since I was twelve years old. Now, at 22, I am equipped with the knowledge and experience to help you go where you want to go!
