The majority of my lessons are over Zoom. I use software called AudioMovers so that we can each hear what the other is doing in lossless high-quality audio. Otherwise, I can travel to the student, or I can host at my studio in Southfields. I aim to impart all the knowledge that I have gained both from experience and from working with the industry's best. I know very well what information has worked for me and what hasn't.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

When I was very young my family would go visit the travellers who lived in 'benders' in the woods. Green hazel tree branches bent and fixed to the ground with a tarpaulin over the top. They had a toy guitar which I was obsessed with. My dad bought me a real nylon string cheapy and that was that.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There's a lot of music I could listen to on a loop. Radiohead, Lianne La Havas, Sinead Harnett, Fleetwood Mac, Marvin Gaye….
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

    How to LISTEN
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I could say something cheesy like 'your miiiiind'…. But probably the Turkish Naye. I've had one for 15 years and still can't make a sound on it!!
  • What are your keys to success?

    Persistence and consistency.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I've had the displeasure of meeting a couple of my musical heroes. The person you admire is just a character. In reality, the person you meet is just a human, with flaws and insecurities.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Asking Lee Foss about a lyric in a Hot Natured track: "is this the contract to sky you're signing" - it sounds like you're trying to sign up for broadband… yeh pretty much!!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

We have very well-established methods for teaching guitar or violin or singing. There are none for production and mixing. It's such a new art, and it has been a lack of accessibility and such a high level of gate-keeping for so long that there are no established techniques to pass the knowledge on other than 10,000 hours of shadowing in a studio working 16hr days 7 days a week. This is obviously incredibly inefficient but now that there are so few music studios around and with rent being so high as to make unpaid internships impossible, it's just no longer a reality. I have developed techniques to teach you how to listen. Once you're hearing honestly and without bias, the rest becomes very easy
