About Debby

My own path into Spanish began with a difficult, halting first year abroad, where nearly every sentence felt like a small risk worth taking. That early discomfort taught me exactly how nervous a new learner can feel before saying a single word aloud. Formal study afterward built real structure around that hard-won early fluency. That personal journey now shapes how gently I introduce Spanish to students carrying similar nerves.

Working with nervous beginners alongside returning adult learners means treating hesitation as completely normal, never something to rush past. I never expect instant confidence, choosing instead to build it slowly through repeated, low-pressure practice. What I find most rewarding is watching a nervous student finally finish a full thought aloud without stopping to apologize first. That small breakthrough often marks the real beginning of genuine fluency.

I continue using Spanish daily myself, through conversation, reading and ongoing contact with native-speaking friends. This keeps my teaching genuine and closely connected to how the language actually gets used day to day. Lessons often adjust closely around whatever topic helps a student feel most naturally comfortable speaking. My hope remains simple, that students leave feeling genuinely at ease with Spanish, not just informed about it.

About the lesson

Returning adult learners often carry old textbook memories that no longer match how they want to actually speak today. Nervous beginners, meanwhile, usually arrive worried about sounding foolish before they've even attempted a full sentence. Both groups start with simple, low-pressure conversation practice, focusing on comfort before accuracy takes center stage. Pronunciation gets steady attention from the very first session, since clear sounds build confidence faster than memorized vocabulary lists ever do.

As sessions continue, I introduce short daily conversation topics, letting students practice speaking about real, familiar things like food, weather or weekend plans. Returning learners often rediscover buried vocabulary quickly once the pressure of perfection is removed from practice. Nervous beginners instead build slowly, celebrating small wins like completing a full sentence without hesitating halfway through. I keep corrections gentle throughout, choosing to model correct phrasing rather than pointing out mistakes directly.

I remind students constantly that speaking imperfectly still counts as real progress worth celebrating. Waiting for perfect grammar before speaking usually just delays fluency rather than protecting it. Topics tied to a student's actual daily life keep practice relevant and genuinely useful. My focus throughout remains steady, helping students speak comfortably long before they speak flawlessly.
