About Craig
I've been playing bass since I was 15 (also played guitar for 5 years prior) and in that time I've come to find my own unique voice on this instrument and really lean into it in my professional life as a musician. I went through college and university studying bass and although it was invaluable, it was only after that I really started to embrace the style of playing that I love, so that's what I always encourage in my students, to be you and play the way you want, instead of just following a paint by numbers of how to be a musician.
As of right now I'm in multiple bands (as is stereotypical of a bassist), from instrumental prog metal to an ambient duo (just bass and vocal). All of which give me freedom to be myself and do more than just basic basslines. I also occasionally do session work (getting paid to play on others songs) which is very rewarding.
The ambient duo especially has taught me loads about writing, not just to accompany other instruments, but to fill out the whole space just by myself, including adding layers. It really is a whole different skill.

I'm very passionate about my instrument and find it very humbling to be able to pass my experience and knowledge on to others, so they can find their own musical voice on the instrument as I have. Especially on an instrument that is so underated and overlooked. Bass is a fairly easy instrument to learn the basics of, because a lot of what you play are single notes. This makes it a good instrument to learn if you are new to playing music. But it can also become one of the most expressive in my opinion, as a bass player normally has more artistic freedom to improvise within bodies of music, while others may be restricted to playing the lines they are given. I believe a good teacher teaches their students to find their own voice on their instrument, instead of just showing you their own voice. Teaching is a way of showing you the tools so that you can create your own art, not just playing other peoples art.
