About Drew
My introduction to classical music came from starting ballet at the age of 4. I always loved Tchaikovsky's ballets, especially The Nutcracker when Christmastime came around. Hearing the Chinese Dance led by the flute (and joined by the piccolo) awakened a spark in me to learn all I could about the flute family and classical music. Through starting flute at the age of 9 in my elementary school's band program and eventually taking private lessons, this spark evolved into a passion for developing a beautiful, shimmering sound that I could one day use to play in a high-caliber orchestra and travel around the world.
School bands eventually led to youth symphonies, and private lessons eventually led to studying with different teachers and performing in international masterclasses and competitions. At 17, I moved to Baltimore to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Music with international soloist Marina Piccinini and the members of the Baltimore Symphony. Here, I minored in Piccolo Performance, and even got to spend a semester playing my flute at the epicenter of Classical Music: Vienna, Austria.
After receiving my Bachelors in Flute Performance, I moved to Glasgow, Scotland to continue my orchestral studies and earn my Masters in Flute Performance. Here, I won apprenticeships with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony, and I got to play alongside my musical heroes whose Nutcracker and Swan Lake albums had inspired my childhood.
Now settled in Portland, Oregon, I am a freelance flautist and artist, having picked up multiple other passions along the way. I've busked on the street with pop musicians, recorded with indie folk artists, and even created my own New Age meditation tracks with various auxiliary and ethnic flutes. When I'm not perfecting my flute skills and gigging with orchestras, I like to spend my time meditating, drinking tea, and training as a contortionist at my local circus arts center.

I teach with games and exercises that you can build onto as you progress on your musical journey -- from the complete beginner, to the accomplished musician.
Starting band and curious about the flute? Let's dive in! We can play games to develop your musical ear, sightread music, and solidify your rhythmic pulse while building a coherent technical foundation.
Already play the flute and preparing for an audition or competition? Let's talk shop and study famous flutists across genres, analyze harmonies, and interpret repertoire together!
Pro saxophonist looking to add auxiliary flute to your arsenal? I can show you how to fine-tune your embouchure with lip exercises and études to get you a singing tone that stays in-tune. I'll also show you some of my favorite practices for developing tension-free finger technique.
Need help starting piccolo? That's my specialty! I minored in Piccolo Performance for both my BMus and MMus at music school, and I'm a passionate proponent of the piccolo's dynamic capabilities as a solo instrument. Together, we'll practice transposition and listening exercises so you can lead your flute section with confidence.
I was taught in the tradition of the French Flute School as passed down from Paul Taffanel to Julius Baker and his students -- my teachers. With respect to the flute and its history, I take my teaching approach in a more modern direction focused on connecting the dots between the breath, the brain, and the body with breathing and visualization exercises, incorporating music across all genres. I take a mind-over-matter approach to sharing the joy of flute playing with students of all ages and abilities.
