About Simon

Simón Sedillo is a Professional Partner with the Earlham College’s Border Studies Program based out of Tucson, Arizona, USA. Sedillo is also a community rights defense organizer, filmmaker, educator, artist, and the author of a creative non-fiction geopolitics and political economy textbook used in U.S. universities and high schools. For the last 15 years, Sedillo has been teaching geopolitics and political economy. Sedillo has contributed to the production of a wide variety of documentary films and investigative articles whose central focus is making current and historical events understandable and accessible to a broad audience. I am a US citizen of Mexican and Native descent who lived and worked in Mexico for over 20 years. I teach and lecture in geopolitics and political economy in both English and Spanish and worked as an independent journalist for 23 years. I also speak French and Italian and am able to help French and Italian speakers with their Spanish proficiency as well. I have been in rural and urban environments as well as formal business and informal street and or work environments which can be particular for what exactly students are trying to learn and for what reason.

My lessons are for beginner and intermediate level learners inside or outside an academic setting. I cater to individuals seeking practical Spanish for day-to-day use, but also am prepared to help with high school and 1st and 2nd year college level classes. I also specialize in workplace Spanish for employers, managers, business owners and employees wishing to better communicate with co-workers and or employees. Finally, I also specialize in Mexican Spanish including regional slang and colloquialisms for travelers and people wishing to study or do business in Mexico or with Mexicans. This can be very useful as books, apps and academic courses fall short on the day-to-day Spanish spoken in different parts of Mexico including jokes, double entendres and how to be careful with saying what, where and when. Lessons: -At the beginner level I focus on vocabulary, basic grammar, and sentence composition. -At the intermediate level I use conversational role play, listening exercises, and music to keep lessons interesting and vibrant. -I am also able to help with homework assignments and keeping students ahead of the curve with regards to goals and expectations set by high school or college instructors. -I keep things light and fun, all while keeping my students on task and moving forward at a progressive pace.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and am of Mexican and Native descent. I was raised speaking both English and Spanish, and I lived both in Mexico and the US. I spent many years traveling back and forth, teaching and learning.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, I enjoy thinking and teaching about the different ways in which people of Mexican, mestizo, and indigenous descent have different worldviews and perspectives, all of which can be seen through language.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I am particularly fond of manners and politeness in Mexican Spanish, as well as the notion that emotions, illness, and states of mind are generally temporary.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Spanish opens up so many worlds and possibilities, and again, worldviews and perspectives. I love sharing this with my students throughout their learning journey.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Genderization and pluralization in Spanish can be particularly difficult, but once you understand certain rules and memorize certain exceptions, it becomes second nature.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

The way we make an effort and carry ourselves with humility and respect greatly changes how others interact with and receive us, regardless of our language level.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Again, I was raised with both English and Spanish, and I have lived in both the USA and Mexico throughout my life.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

    - My ability to translate worldviews and perspectives in such a way that makes my courses more engaging and interesting.

-The way in which I tailor my lessons to each one of my students.

-The way that I help students break down their own insecurities around language learning.

    - The way that I identify progress and encourage students along their learning journey.
