About Matthew
I recently graduated with 4 Bachelor's Degrees from UC Berkeley, including a B. A. in Psychology, B. A. in Molecular and Cell Biology (Neurobiology), B. A. in Integrative Human Biology and B. S. in Nutritional Sciences (Toxicology)! I also did a minor in Math and Science Education (CalTeach).
My teaching experiences encompasses a wide array of age ranges. From my minor in Math and Science Education, I was placed in various field placements in local middle schools and high schools to observe teachers, help as an assistant, and teach lessons of my own pertaining to the cirriculum. My minor was mainly focused on students in K-12 learning. I also worked for a private tutoring company (Miles Smart Tutoring) for 1 year during the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching high school students and community college students with AP Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra and even ASVAB prep. I was also a TA for CHEM 1AL, the general chem lab class for undergraduates.

My teaching method involves a multimodal approach, using visuals, audio, reading, and kinesthetic materials to ensure that the student is learning as best as they can, with the modality that they are most comfortable learning information with. I also try to use as many culturally relevant teaching examples as I can to make complicated science topics seems a lot easier to understand. I use the process of scaffolding, whihc focuses on first building a solid foundation of the basics before scaffolding and layering more and more complex problems/ideas; without a solid foundation of the basics, there is no way to learn the more complicated ideas. Finally, I use call and response fairly often in one-on-one tutoring sessions; although I will teach you the material by talking at you for a little bit, ultimately I will expect that my students participate in attempting the problems that we solve, finding common mistakes and misconceptions, and clearing those up for upcoming tests and assignments. With my teaching and tutoring history, as well as my pedagogical training (see "About Me"!) I am equipped and prepared to teach all ages, for all levels of science.
