About Kaya
I am a Math Education PhD student at UC Davis and recently graduated from UC Berkeley's math department. In addition to tutoring, I conduct research on teaching practices in upper division undergraduate mathematics courses. Through my research on math education and my own experience as a math student, I know how difficult this subject can seem, but the challenges that come with learning math can often be attributed to ineffective teaching, rather than the student's ability or the subject itself. Even when students understand mathematical concepts, they often fail to complete their work or put proper time into studying because they see math as boring and irrelevant to real life. I hope to show students that math is important and exciting while helping them gain the skills to learn and study effectively!

Teaching math is my passion. I have taught and tutored kids and adults of all ages and all levels of k-12 level math (and college calculus) in learning centers, after school programs, private lessons, and group tutoring sessions. Through this experience, as well as my research on math education, I have honed an effective method to ensure students not only improve their grades, but develop a greater understanding and more positive relationship with this subject that students all too often find discouraging and challenging.
My lesson plans vary depending on the student's needs, but I will always prioritize making sure the student gains true understanding (rather than memorization of formulas) and I will approach lessons alongside the student with a positive, persistent attitude to help them realize their full mathematical potential!
