About Liting

My name is Liting. I have a Master's in Mathematics and a Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley, and I've been tutoring math for 8 years across all grade levels.

Over time, I've found where I have the most impact: middle schoolers in grades 6–8, especially students making the transition from elementary math and hitting their first real wall — fractions, negative numbers, pre-algebra, equations.

This is the window that matters most. Students who build a strong foundation in middle school move through high school math with confidence. Students who don't spend years playing catch-up.

My current students have been working with me consistently for 3+ months. Parents tell me the biggest change they notice isn't just the grades — it's that their kid stopped saying "I'm just not a math person."

I also teach Mandarin (reading, writing, and conversation) and offer bilingual instruction for families who prefer it.

About the lesson

Every student I work with starts differently — some are behind and anxious, some are capable but bored, some just need someone to slow down and explain the "why" behind the formula.

A typical session looks like this: we start by reviewing whatever came up since last time — homework struggles, test mistakes, or concepts that didn't click in class. Then we work through new material together, with me asking questions more than giving answers. I want students to find the logic themselves, not just copy steps. We finish with independent practice so I can see what actually stuck.

I give parents a brief update after each session — what we covered, what to watch, what's next. You won't wonder what happened in the lesson.

Sessions available in person (El Cerrito Library or your home) or online. I offer a free 30-minute first session — not a test of your child, but a chance for me to show you how I teach and for us to see if we're a good fit.
