About Jonathan

As a UC Berkeley alumnus with a minor in music and over 25 years of piano experience, I offer dedicated instruction in piano performance and music theory. My foundational training culminated in passing the prestigious ABRSM Grade 8 examination (highest Level in this category) at just age 16. With more than 10 years of professional teaching experience, I specialize in tailoring curriculum for students of all ages and skill levels. Additionally, my background includes extensive experience leading summer camps for elementary, middle, and high school students in both individual and group class formats.

I'm currently enrolled in a master's program in psychology and have extensive experience supporting students with ADHD, reading disabilities, and emotional challenges.

First trail lesson will be $50 for 45 minutes.

Certification:
ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Certificate (highest Level in this category)
University of California, Berkeley — Minor in Music (Class of 2017)
Master in Psychology — (In Progress)

Lessons will be taken place in my studio in Castro, San Francisco 94114 or at your home in SF (language available in both English and Chinese)

About the lesson

I teach both piano & music theory and work with students of any age and skill level (from beginner to advanced level). I am patient and want to make sure that my students are learning as well as having fun at the same time. I will uniquely tailor your lesson plans to help you reach the specific goals you care about!

The usual class covers topics such as Scales, Chords, Music theory, and Sight Reading.

For beginner level, I introduce students to note-reading, scale, technique, entry music theory, and easy songs to play with.

For intermediate and advanced levels, I focus more on improvisation and knowledge of chord-scale theory.

Lessons will be taken place in my studio in Castro, San Francisco 94114 or at your home in SF (language available in both English and Chinese)

Cancellations made on the same day will be subject to a full charge.

Perfect! If I could give Jonathan an infinite number of stars, I would. He was extremely patient, but also playful, when teaching my 3-year-old son. Not many tutors teach piano before the age of 4, and I began to understand why. Toddlers are all over the place and oftentimes, unable to remain still.
But amazingly, Jonathan was able to teach my son new tunes every week. Tunes that my son memorized and could play on his own. I was shocked at what my son could accomplish, and it wouldn't have been possible without Jonathan's unique ability to "meet you where you're at." His approach wasn't rigid or overly structured. It was simply tailored to what set you up to learn as best as possible.
I highly recommend Jonathan; you will have a truly fulfilling experience.

Perfect! Jonathan is a fantastic piano teacher: knowledgeable, patient, and thoughtful in how he paces my learning. He makes lessons engaging by letting me choose songs that I enjoy, and keeps me motivated through challenging pieces. I always look forward to our sessions and really appreciate how much I’m growing under his guidance!
