About Finn
Finn Hansbury is a folk-rock songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in Los Angeles, California. He draws inspiration from musical and lyrical geniuses like Hozier, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Paul Simon, and Eva Cassidy. Finn uses his craft as a channel to express his innermost vulnerabilities without sugarcoating the truth, and it is this kind of honesty that draws people in. Hailing from Bar Harbor, Maine, a small town on Mount Desert Island, Finn often writes about his experience as a queer person growing up in rural America, and seeks to connect with and empower the LGBTQ+ community through his work.
As an Interlochen Arts Academy and Berklee College of Music graduate, Finn understands the importance of arts education. Through private instruction, he aims to empower other musicians by offering lessons in songwriting, music theory, voice, and guitar.
While a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Finn tutored his peers in music theory. He helped them with their coursework in ear training, harmony, arranging, tonal harmony, counterpoint, and conducting. Finn also took "The Private Studio Teacher" as a part of his course load, where he learned the ins and outs of private teaching as a career. He has taught lessons in songwriting, voice, and guitar through this class.

I want my students to be the most well-rounded musicians that they can be. I want them to be able to walk into every room feeling like they can handle whatever is thrown at them. But what I want the most is to instill joy and confidence in my students, whether they want to learn songwriting, music theory, voice, or guitar. While I specialize in teaching singer-songwriters, many of the instruments and subjects I teach have transferable skills that are sure to help up-and-coming musicians reach their full potential.
A typical hour-long lesson may look like this (songwriting is used as the subject for this example):
• 10 minutes – Chat about previous week, light stretching/movement: Get the body warm, answer any questions, talk about upcoming opportunities, etc.
• 15 minutes – Vocal warmups: Spend the beginning of the lesson warming up the voice before we work on repertoire.
• 10 minutes – Object writing: Work on crafting sense-bound language through a 5-8 minute object write to exercise the writing muscle. Share both of our writings afterwards.
• 20 minutes – Repertoire: Work through a song from the student’s original song catalog. This part of the lesson will focus on different things depending on where the lesson takes us and what the student has coming up. The song we work on may be something I asked them to write during the week before the lesson as a part of a prompt, or it might be another song that they want to work on for an upcoming performance. Depending on the situation, we may focus on lyrics, harmony, vocals, accompaniment, performance technique, etc.
• 5 minutes – Wrap-up and homework: Summarize what we worked on during the lesson and provide direction for the student’s practice sessions for the next week. Encourage students to do vocal warm-ups, object writing exercises, and practice repertoire with intention, incorporating ideas talked about from the lesson.
